# Styling

> Make your documents visually stunning with customizable fonts, colors, backgrounds, and cover images.

Craft makes it easy to create beautiful documents without any design expertise. Style your content with custom colors, backgrounds, fonts, cover images, and decorative elements like Washi tape separators.

## What You Can Style

Craft's styling system operates at two levels: **text-level** and **page-level**. This gives you precise control over individual elements while maintaining cohesive document-wide aesthetics.

### Text-Level Styling

Apply to individual blocks or selections within your document:

* **Fonts** – Choose from System (default), Serif (elegant reading), Mono (code-friendly), or Rounded (approachable and modern)
* **Text colors** – Select from preset colors or create custom shades
* **Highlights** – Add background color to emphasize specific text
* **Lists** – Customize bullet styles, numbering formats, and indentation

### Page-Level Styling

Apply to the entire document for a unified look:

* **Colors** – Set document background and default text color
* **Cover Images** – Add visual headers from Unsplash's curated library or upload your own photos
* **Backgrounds** – Choose solid colors, gradients, or full-page images with blur effects
* **Separators** – Style horizontal dividers with Washi tape patterns, simple lines, or geometric shapes
* **Cards** – Transform pages into visually distinct card layouts with colored borders or image backgrounds

## Common Use Cases

### Professional Documents

For business reports, proposals, or client-facing documents:

* Use **Serif** fonts for a traditional, authoritative feel
* Apply **neutral colors** (grays, whites) for backgrounds
* Add a **cover image** that represents your brand or topic
* Keep **text highlighting** minimal - reserve for key metrics or calls-to-action

### Personal Knowledge Base

For notes, journals, or learning materials:

* Experiment with **Rounded** or **System** fonts for comfortable reading
* Use **color-coded backgrounds** to differentiate topic areas (blue for work, green for personal)
* Apply **highlights** liberally to mark important passages for quick scanning
* Try **Washi tape separators** to add personality and visual breaks

### Creative Projects

For mood boards, portfolios, or storytelling:

* Mix **card layouts** with **image backgrounds** for visual impact
* Use **gradient backgrounds** to create atmosphere
* Apply **custom text colors** that complement your imagery
* Layer **cover images** with **blur effects** for depth

### Code Documentation

For technical notes or development logs:

* Default to **Mono** font for code blocks and technical content
* Use **high-contrast colors** (dark background, light text) for reduced eye strain
* Apply **simple separators** to clearly divide sections
* Keep **page backgrounds** minimal to focus attention on content

<Info title="Style Consistency">
  Once you've found a style you love, save it as your default in **Space Settings**. This ensures all new documents start with your preferred aesthetic, saving time and maintaining consistency across your workspace.

## Customization Workflow

Here's a typical workflow for styling a new document:

<Steps>
  <Step>
    **Start with the page foundation** - Choose your background (color, gradient, or image) and cover image if desired. This sets the overall mood.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    **Select your font** - Pick a typeface that matches your document's purpose (Serif for formal, Mono for technical, Rounded for casual).
  </Step>

  <Step>
    **Add structural elements** - Insert separators between major sections to create visual hierarchy and improve scannability.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    **Apply text-level styles** - As you write, use highlights, colors, and formatting to emphasize key points and create visual interest.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    **Refine and adjust** - Step back and review. Adjust colors, try different fonts, or switch separator styles until the document feels right.
  </Step>
</Steps>
